"Moonfleet was first published in 1898 and has remained a
favourite with older children ever since. The story deals,
with the adventures of John Trenchard, who tells the tale.
He is 15 years of age when the story opens, an orphan, living
with a prim aunt in the fishing village of Moonfleet. The
time is the closing years of George the Second's reign. Smuggling
is carried on extensively, and the boy stumbles upon a hiding
place for contraband liquor. At the same time he finds a cipher
to the treasure of the Mohune family. In addition, there is
the theme of revenge against one who had killed a young boy
of the smuggling gang. This villain has one daughter for whom
our hero has early sympathy, and later love. With these ingredients,
not to mention travel, fights, intrigues, slavery, escape
and a happy return to Moonfleet, this book offers as breathtaking
a yarn as any rightminded person could wish to read.
It is, however, no mere "blood and thunder" story. It is written
with a sober beauty which recalls Defoe, and the character
of John Trenchard shines with a sweet and wholesome simplicity."
The Times Educational Supplement
"An excellent, and very welcome, new edition of Moonfleet.
Without the padding and over writing which puts off so many
children, the story is now fast moving and exciting, and will
appeal to children of all ages.
