Jon leaned over the parapet of the old mine and shouted, "Hi!
Anybody down there?"
His voice boomed and echoed down the shaft, but the only sound
to break the silence was the distant drip of water far below.
"Very odd," he said. "Can you see a light?
Maybe it is pot holers".
David shouted down the shaft again, but only the echoes came
back to them. "None of our business, I suppose, but it seems
peculiar to be exploring an old mine on a day like this."
But the situation in which the Lone Piners, holidaying in
Yorkshire, soon find themselves turns out to be much more
than peculiar, and the mysterious visitor to the old mine
on the land Harriet Sparrows grandfather is buying becomes
very much their business.
An astonishingly good offer is made to Mr Sparrow for the
mine, too good to be true, and he does not want to sell anyway.
What is more, the irrepressible twins Dickie and Mary are
sure they recognise the voice of the man making the offer.
Just what is the secret of the old mine? And who is the strange
young man who is determined to show them the deserted village
of Coram Street high on the Yorkshire Moors. And where does
the sinister Miss Wildblood fit into the picture? And then
Harriet and Mary disappear, and a threatening letter arrives
for Grandpa Sparrow . . . The other Lone Piners go into action
on his behalf, and the ensuing adventure taxes all their skill
and courage.
Another exciting and complete story in Malcolm Saville's deservedly
popular Lone Pine Adventure series.
