"Whatever you do, DON'T MOVE," Ann had told me and I honestly
didn't intend to. But then I had one of my Impulses, though
I knew it was going to get us all into trouble.Without pausing
to think what I was doing, I took one tremendous jump from
my crouching position by the bed, rose up in the air like
a helicopter, and landed PLONK, right in the middle of Mrs
Robinson's broad back. You should have heard her scream .
. . . Smoky Joe has been sent away to school with Ann. Not
that he thinks school can teach him anything. As Lord of his
local Cat Council, Smoky Joe knows just about everything about
everything - that a self-respecting cat should know, anyway!
Ann's parents, the Lanes, have gone to Bermuda for a holiday,
so Smoky's off to boarding school to keep Ann company. And
he certainly has a busy time there. Although the headmistress
is agreeable to his visit, others are not. Smoky has distinct
problems with the ferocious, cat-hating cook Mario, who's
only too handy with a carving knife. And then there is Mrs
Robinson the housekeeper. What with her tempting goldfish,
spilling bottles of her ink, and of course her midnight visit
to Ann's dormitory to check all is well . . . Smoky Joe has
to use all his ingenuity to escape her vengeance . . . . And
he has adventures in the feline world too. There is his terrible
fight with Pu the Powerful, the horrible ginger cat who seems
to think Smoky is trespassing on his patch. There was the
friendship he struck up with Dalu the Dandy, the rather superior
stripey cat - which led to Smoky's tangle with the Law and
a narrow escape from being taken to the local cat pound (or
worse!). All in all, Smoky Joe finds he's learnt quite a lot
at school before he finally gets safely back home to his waiting
girlfriend, Sally.
