Information about our Club

{short description of image}History of the Club

The Sailing club at Runswick Bay was Founded in 1953 by a group of friends that all had an interest in both sailing and Runswick Bay. From these beginnings the club managed to obtain the lease on the beach cafe as its base and new club house.

It soon developed into a very popular sailing venue, with various types of mono-hulled craft out most weekends in the summer. The first major change came with the introduction of the Shearwater Catamaran in 1960. This soon became the Benchmark Boat and most members at the time swapped one hull for two. In 1977 the club held a promotional weekend with a new type of Catamaran - the Dart 18 and the ageing Shearwater was replaced.

In 1998 the club name changed and we became not only a Sailing Club but a Beach Club. The Club {short description of image}House is located in the South Western corner of Runswick Bay approximately 1/2 mile from the village where there is parking for the club members. The Bay itself is edged by soft sandy beaches that butt up to the high cliffs that form the two imposing headlands, while in the middle boulder clay forms gentle slopes to the beach - It is here that the club has created a Boat Park providing easy access to the beach.

As can be seen Runswick Bay offers not only an ideal sailing location but a place for all the family to enjoy.

Facilities at the Club

The club house offers a number of facilities both for sailors and beach members alike. The Dining area offers a place to eat as well as having a fully equipped kitchen for members use.

There is a bar that is run by the club steward to quench your thirst after either a day sailing, volleyball on the beach or just sitting in the sun. Barbecue facilities are also available.

Other facilities include basic changing rooms with hot showers, toilets and a race office. The sun patio is a real sun trap with deck chairs available to use.

Opening Times

We are open each Sunday April - October 11:00am onwards.
The Club is available for use by its members at all times during the summer.

Sailing

Sailing takes place an Sundays when one or two races are held within the bay - start times 12:00pm, however a long distance race may be planned for a Saturday - this could be to Whitby to the south or Staithes to the north. Often these long distance races stop at a local hostelry before the return journey.
All Racing and Long distance sailing have the club rescue boat in attendance.

The Boat Park is hidden from the beach by a small bank and offers a safe place to keep your boat away from strong winds in this sheltered area. Fresh water is available to rinse of the saltwater from your boat. Boats are launched and recovered to the boat park with the club tractors, making it easy to get on and off the water at any state of the tide.
