Dear
Member,
After My
ramblings of the December newsletter I hope I wetted your appetite for the
ensuing season. We anticipate a long hot summer and some fair winds that will
create exciting racing. I for one have got my work cut out as having taken a
large portion of the silverware at the laying up supper, I was duly informed
that my handicap would be suitably amended, that I suppose is exactly what
handicaps are for, It just goes to show that anybody can win on the Portsmouth
yard Handicap system.
I hope
that as many of you as possible can attend the working days as it helps ease
the workload for the rest of the maintenance gang.
During
my next term as commodore I intend to try and increase the membership
particularly sailing members to that end this year we will be holding a club
open day with a "come and try sailing" theme so if you know anybody who may be
interested in joining the club please contact them or pass on details to myself
to contact them. We are hoping to reinforce the junior members of the club and
have introduced a new class of dinghies for them (see article below)
The club
social calendar is looking very exciting and full, this year the Summer Ball
and Commodores weekend has been separated, as holding them both on the same
weekend was always a compromise with the tides. We are also hosting a wedding
reception at the club for two of our newest members Simon Carr and Sally Wilson
on June 6th this year.
Sadly
Steve Mellalieu has resigned due to work commitments, after two years of
sterling work as helm on the club rescue boat. Our thanks go to Steve and
Rachel for their dedication to the club and we hope to see them in a social
capacity as time allows. If you want to be or know of anybody capable of being
the safety boat helm please tell them to contact myself directly this is an
essential job for a reliable person and a paid position.
We are
also sad to accept the resignation of John Vaughan from the committee it seems
to be the end of an era to me, John kindly sold me my first boat (with
Flossie's blessing) a Catamaran named Hilarious and with it came a series of
free lessons moulding me into the fine sailor I am today! John has been offered
a lifetime honorary membership.
So as
the new season approaches it is with much anticipation I look forward to seeing
you down at the club or on the beach and more importantly on the
water!!
Kind
regards, |

boat -
We
are in need of a new safety boat helm Are you somebody who could spare a Sunday
afternoon and would like to get out onto the water? The race boat needs an
assistant. Contact Mick Singleton or Chris Smith if you could. Even if it is
just the odd one. |
AGM
The
AGM was held after an enjoyable meal at The Royal Hotel. Notable proceedings
were John Vaughan resigned from the post of Vice President after many years of
loyal service to the club John offered his resignation to the committee to make
way for younger blood; however the meeting felt that such had been John's
involvement and commitment that he should be offered an honorary life
membership.
Mick
Singleton is standing for a second term as commodore with Richard Willis as
Vice Commodore
Other
new appointments were:-
Tom
Willis and Simon Carr offered themselves and were duly elected to the
committee.
Tom
Willis offered his services as club bo'sn, and will be responsible for the
safety boat and the club dinghies.
Joy
Willis is to be the club social secretary and will be forming a committee to
arrange the clubs social programme during the year, if you would be prepared to
help please speak to Joy. |

With
the start of another new sailing season fast approaching, it is time to start
thinking about dusting off the sails and donning your wet suit once again
(fingers crossed the Christmas pudding has warn off by now!!)
We
have an exciting sailing agenda ahead of us for 2009. There will be the usual
Sunday racing series for all to compete in and gives the chance for any sailor
experienced or novice to win races and take home one of the seasonal series
trophies. Our annual events to look forward to include Commodore's day, RBBSC
Regatta and RNLI Sail to Staithes on Lifeboat day.
The
Youth Training that has normally been held on the first Sunday of each month
from June, has been re-arranged so that it fits in better with the high tide,
which helps with the Pico training (please see the calendar for dates). As pre
previous years, sessions are free to full members aged between 12 and 18,
numbers are limited to 6 youths per session and are based on a first come first
serve basis. Please complete a request form (obtainable from the club house) or
contact me via email for further information.
RBBSC Social
News
After
a successful social calendar last year - this year sees the formation of a much
needed Social Committee to plan and organise the 2009 busy social
calendar.
Events are published in the 2009 Sailing and Social Programme but will
also be displayed in the clubhouse. There will be an opportunity for members to
'sign up' to participate in these social events.
We
will also be looking for volunteers to support our social calendar and help to
raise club funds throughout the year.
A
list of forthcoming events will be displayed in the club so that members can
'sign up' to volunteer support in the kitchen, with catering or with the
organisation of events.
The
BBQ will be available throughout the season with specific social BBQs in the
calendar when the bar will be open 'til late.
When
it is too cold to BBQ don't forget we now have excellent cooking facilities in
the new kitchen.
Please be aware, that as we do not have a club cleaner, we do rely on
all members cleaning and washing up after themselves. Please make sure that the
cooker and BBQ are cleaned after every use.
Joy,
Fiona, Ann and Rachel |
As
Mick has mentioned it is with regret to inform you that Steve Melanue has had
to resign this season as our Rescue Boat helm. I would personally like to thank
Steve for all his hard work, time and effort for last season and hope to see
him back in the future! We are currently looking for a new helm for the coming
season, please contact a member of the committee if you or if you know of
anyone interested.
Ironically, it is sometimes very easy to forget about the sailing side
of the club. As we are often overwhelmed with many other activities that the
club has to offer on the social side of things. This year my aim will be to
touch base with every boat owner in the boat park and entice as many people
onto the water possible. Last year we had a total of 7 boats from the boat park
take to the water throughout the course of the year to compete in the Sunday
race series and would love to see this number increase this year.
I
look forward to seeing you all on the water very soon!

RBBSC Golf
Trophy
The
Golf Competition is to be held at Whitby Golf Club on 8th July with first Tee
being at 2.10 pm. Players please meet at say 1.00 pm for a sandwich, and a
drink to steady your nerves, and of course a briefing.
After
the golf I will be arranging for meal at Trenchers restaurant in Whitby at
about 7.30 pm.
It
is hoped that as many members as possible will take part in the Golf, and
guests are welcome, subject to numbers. It is a fun outing and no serious golf
is anticipated.
It is
also hoped that partners and other members who wish to do so will join us for
the meal afterwards.
Peter Wright will be putting up a notice in the Club House with details, and
with a list for interested members to indicate their wish to play, and whether
they wish a booking to be made at Trenches.
The
Trophy will be presented on Commodores Day, and the competition will be on a
Stableford basis.
If
members wish to get in touch with me - Telephone No. 01642700146, and will be
appreciated by all who wish to play, a definite commitment is necessary, as
Tees at Whitby are very much in demand in the summer. |

· Leave the changing rooms in a respectable state when using
them that includes washing out club wetsuits.
· Leave the kitchen including the oven and sink in a clean
state.

future)
· There is also, what is called a committee key this key will
serve the generator cabinet, the safety boat cabinet in the boat park and the
room next to the bar under normal circumstances.
· The safety boat padlocks and wheel clamps and the bar padlock
