From early childhood Wendy has been
surrounded by the fabrics, threads, paint and paper of her creative family.
Passionate about textile related creativity, she completed City and Guilds
Creative Studies (Embroidery) Part 1 in 2001 ( Highly Commended) and Part 2 in
2003.
She is particularly interested in surface texture, stitching into a variety of
materials including layered paper and paper clay.
A collection of work emerged from a study into the patterns and textures of
medieval floor tiles and used materials directly related to the source.
Air-dried clay added to hand-made paper pulp produced an interesting surface to
stitch into. Coarse Indian tissue paper, layered with PVA, made a firm and
richly tactile basis for hand and machine embroidery. This work developed into
three- dimensional forms in which she explored and opened up the geometric
shapes of the designs.
Subsequent work explored images which are partly hidden: faded Italian frescoes,
the inspirational painted monasteries of Moldavia and the hidden images of the
Orthodox church provided rich sources of inspiration. Her hanging entitled
‘Hidden Fragments’ was short-listed for the Charles Henry Foyle Prize at
Redditch Needle Museum. ‘Hidden Fragments’ is currently displayed at Foxhill
Diocesan Centre.
Wendy seems to work large and enjoyed the challenge of a commission for a local
church consisting of five panels, the largest of which was thirteen feet high!
The involvement of the community in this project was important and it can be
seen in Frodsham Methodist Church.
Her work entitled ‘Windsails’ was inspired by a visit to The
Holy Island of Lindisfarne. She exhibited her
work in the St. Cuthbert’s Centre from July 30th until August 13th 2005 and it
has travelled to various venues in the North West of England (see
Projects for details). She returned to Lindisfarne
with a new exhibition - Nets - in Summer 2007, and then with
Dwelling Space in 2009.
Wendy lives in Frodsham, Cheshire, England. The installations - Windsails, Nets
and Dwelling Space - are available to create a meditative reflective environment in galleries,
retreat centres, schools or churches.
