(Reveal exhibition - 2008).
Large
hanging pieces of pieced, seamed and mended paper, softened and
treated to behave 'as cloth' are grouped with rolls and smaller
folded pieces which evoke the places where cloth is sold.
This work references Wendy’s own family memories. In
war-time, sheets were seamed 'side to middle' and 'make do and mend'
became a way of life. Her father's stories of paper production from
fibre to finished product inspired a love of paper.
As Cloth combines these narratives to offer glimpses of
values, skills and attitudes passed from one generation to another.
It can be exhibited in many different configurations: as large
hangings, grouped or singly, as rolls on stands and smaller folded
pieces. In larger spaces it is possible for the viewer to become a
more active participant, to walk among the individual parts, to
enter the environment rather than viewing it from a distance. |
