After a
visit to Winchester Cathedral Wendy became interested in mediaeval floor
tiles – their textures and patterns. This gave rise to the themes of her
work. The materials she used were directly related to the tiles –
air-dried clay added to hand-made paper pulp produced an interesting
surface to stitch into. Coarse Indian tissue paper, layered with PVA, made
a firm and richly tactile basis for hand and machine embroidery. This work
developed into three-dimensional forms in which she explored and opened up
the geometric shapes of the tile designs.
