Windsails...

While staying on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Wendy was fascinated by the visual richness in the details of the landscape. She noticed the curves in water and boat, the line of the upturned boat-hulls which serve as sheds, the intricate webs of crab and lobster creels.

As she started to sketch shapes on paper, a triangular form began to develop which she interpreted in structures made of withies. A cane triangle, bound together with string, formed itself into parabolic curves. She filled these triangles with meshes of paper, string, thread and stitch until they became sails.

When these were connected and hung from one another, they became mobile structures, responsive to the slightest breath, communicating the absorbed tranquillity which she experienced on Lindisfarne. These ‘Windsails’ can bear all kinds of meanings, but they have obvious links with boats and sails, the festooning of nets, the movements of flying birds and the tremble of leaves in the wind.

Windsails made a first appearance at Southport Floral Hall this Easter, and was on show in the St Cuthbert's Centre, Lindisfarne from July 30th-August 13th 2005. Click here for a report and pictures...
