Wessex Soaring Association

History and Background

The WSA has been in existence for approximately 35 years, it being formed originally by a small group of modellers based mainly in the Wimborne Minster area, with the sole activity being silent radio controlled model flying, non-powered. Access to a range of slope sites located off the A30 Shaftesbury to Salisbury Rd was agreed with local landowners and in addition the use of a selection of flat field sites in the Canford Magna area of Wimborne/Poole was also arranged. A pre condition of the use of all WSA sites is that absolutely no powered flight is allowed, which includes electric flight.

The WSA started with about 25 members, but over the years this has grown to the current level of around 50. Membership is drawn from a wide area and the types of model flown is also very varied, and at all levels, from occasional flyer to the keen national competitors in F3J and F3F. Along with growing membership there has been a change to the location of the flat field site, this is now at a new site approximately 10 miles outside Wimborne with year round access to good sized grass fields.

For newcomers to the hobby/sport of R/C Soaring help and advice is always available, and training can be provided. At the flat field flying site club owned bungees are available for use by the membership, and a club style (constant tension, non F3B) winch is also held by a committee member for use at club events and gatherings.

Club meetings are held monthly; from January to April these meetings are held indoors, with guest speakers arranged whenever possible. From May to September meetings are held at the flat field flying site, frequently with a light hearted small competition included. From October to December meetings move back indoors, again with guest speakers where possible or other club activities such as quiz nights or photographic competitions arranged. Whenever a guest speaker is arranged non  WSA members are welcomed, a small charge being applied to assist with the cost of large room hire. The AGM is held in December of each year, and currently, as with all the indoor meetings, this is in a room within the Allendale Community Centre, Wimborne.

The club has a monthly newsletter - Glidepath - that is circulated to all members. This contains the essential information concerning access to the various flying sites, news of forthcoming events plus a range of articles submitted by the membership.

Throughout the year competitions for both flat field and slope soaring disciplines are held. The key is always to keep the emphasis on fun, and to be open to members of varying ability. Frequently flat field events are held to a handicapped system, this helps equalise the differences in performance from the basic 2-metre rudder/elevator model to the latest fully moulded high performance multi function model.

During the year the club also hold events that are open to entry from members of other local clubs. In the past this has even been extended to the running of BARCS Open Thermal events, although unfortunately this has not happened for quite a while, availability of both large flat field flying sites and enough helpers has not been easy.
