BASINGSTOKE FESTIVAL OF TRANSPORT

The Thornycroft Society Ltd.

Sunday 11th May 2008

On a beautiful May day the Standard Motor Club was represented by members of the New Forest Group with a 1939 Standard Flying Eight Tourer owned and driven by the club’s Publicity officer Darrell Cunningham helped by young member Oliver Hannam-Penfold aged 12.

The journey there proved very easy until 2 miles from the ground, when they joined a long queue of some 500 vehicles trying to enter by one small road.

Like a good few (MGAs Austins,TR2s, fire engines etc) the car overheated and was pushed  to the show.

The stand although small attracted many visitors young and old alike.

Among the cars on show were a trio of Triumph Razor Edge saloons

It is hoped they will come to the August 9th Event

 at Beaulieu.

Run by the New Forest Group

Having solved the overheating problem (or so it was thought) Darrell & Oliver started home.

Spotting a shortage of petrol they went in to fill up. Leaving the garage some 200 yards up the road the engine died.

With the help of the police the car was rolled back to the forecourt where a very helpful pump attendant got his spanners out and with some cold water and a drop of fuel straight into the carb it was off again.
