The transition from Iron to Steel - a Scottish perspective
Prof Hugh McQueen is Emeritus Professor of Metallurgy at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada and his career spans over 40 years.  He has a special interest in the history of technology. In his talk, given on 10th September 2009, Hugh made special reference to the work of David Kirkaldy whose precise tensile testing, fractography and metallography gives him the honour of being the father of  thermo-mechanical processing. You can download a copy of Hugh's paper here.

Testing times for the Forth Road Bridge
There has been much speculation in the press about the state of the Forth Road Bridge, but what is the true picture?  Cliff McGuire of Bodycote Testing Edinburgh presented the results of a programme of work which sampled the suspension cables, checked the mechanical properties of the wires and examined the extend of corrosion and wire breakage.  His talk was given on Thursday 17th January 2008 at 7pm in the University of Strathclyde James Weir Building, Montrose Street, Glasgow and is available for download here.

Materials for New Nuclear Power
If and when Britain replaces its ageing nuclear power stations, what technologies will be available for selection.  Joe Mcguigan of British Energy gave us an insight on 17th April 2007.  Here is his presentation.

Optimising Stainless Steel Piping Fabrication Practise
Stainless steels are selected for service in oil and gas systems because of their high level of corrosion resistance. On 19th January 2006,  Dr Liane Smith of Intetech gave guidance on the optimum practise to give the best confidence in the quality of fabrications.  Her paper is available for download here.
