I've been a great fan of BattleTech for many years now. For those of you who've never played it, Battle Tech is a tabletop game of armed combat in the 31st century in which BattleMechs are the dominant units. BattleMechs are 10+ Metre high robots piloted by a human MechWarrior. It may sound silly but the background is about the best thought out, detailed and most realistic of any Sci-Fi game that I've ever come across, and the original version set in 3025 is a extraordinarily well ballanced strategy game. It has been hugely sucesful and has spawned a Role Playing Game called MechWarrior (a pretty good game in itself that blends well with the original BattleTech), several computer games (MechWarrior, MechWarrior II, and Mech Commander all excelent games even if the original MechWarrior is a little dated), a couple of virtual reality centres (One in London, and one in Chicago), a separate game simulating air and space combat, dozens of very good source books, dozens of books set in the BattleTech universe, not to mention the fan clubs, and unofficial spin offs.
BattleTech has evolved over the years through wars, the invasion of known space by a group known as the Clans, as well as the addition of new technology. This new technology seems to me to have unbalanced the game somewhat, but it is still an excelent game, and you can always still stick to the 3025 era like I do.
