Organic farming

Organic farms:
grow five times more wild plants
57 extra species
44% more bird
1.6 times more insects and invertebrates.

These findings by a Soil Association research study set out the evidence "comprehensively, forcibly and effectively" said the environment minister - Michael Meacher. Hewent on to say "This is an acutely important issue the government must continue to review, and will. There is no question that organic farming is good for biodiversity, good for the natural countryside, good for the whole web of life."

twitetwite

The twite is special to the South Pennines. They breed in tall bracken and heather but rely on herb-rich hay meadows for seeds on which to feed their young. With changes to farming practices the population is thought to have halved in the 1990's so that possibly fewer than 225 breeding pairs remain in the area. The RSPB is calling on the government to increase payments under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme to try to reverse the downward trend.
