West Yorkshire stretches from the Pennine hills in the west to the Vale of York in the east; and from the lowlands of the Aire valley in the north to the moorlands and pastures of the Peak District to the south. Through the middle flows the River Calder with its many tributaries cutting deep valleys on the Pennine slopes.

The area is thus a rich mosaic of hill farms, the highly populous cities of Leeds and Bradford, and the smaller centres of Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield and lowland farms.

Perhaps the area is best known to the outsider as one of the centres of the Industrial revolution, particularly with its woollen mills, but also as the home of the Bronte sisters - from Haworth, just south of Keighley.
