These
classes are designed to appeal to the modern man who is seeking a time
efficient way to keep fit and to control stress.Yoga was originally
designed for men for their own benefit.
However, in the Western world, it is women who have particularly
taken up yoga and now benefit from it.
Perhaps this is because in the West yoga is seen is an
easy/soft/gentle/non-competitive activity.
It
is the aim of these classes to redress the balance by focussing on
postures that require, or will develop, strength and stamina.
However, since strength without suppleness is of little benefit,
techniques appropriate to men will be used to develop suppleness.
It
is often forgotten that Yoga aims to train the mind, the biggest challenge
of all. A trained mind is
capable of anything. Achieving
this requires stamina, strength and self-discipline.
The ability to train and so to calm the mind is invaluable since it
enables important matters to be identified and acted upon – an
invaluable aid for coping with the stresses of modern life.
Whilst
the posture work has a subtle effect on the mind, more direct control is
achieved by use of the breath. Simple
techniques will be taught that will allow their use in everyday
circumstances to help control stress.
The
ability to fully relax is vital to be able to cope with the stresses of
modern life. However many of
us seek relaxation through diversions – which, whilst seemingly
relaxing, do not give the brain the deep relaxation it needs to fully
recover. This deep relaxation can only come from a tranquil mind and body.
Consequently, this is the ultimate, long-term aim of the classes.
