| Improved posture, muscle
strengthening and stress management are just a few of the things yoga can offer to enable
the spine to be healthy again after injury or chronic and acute pain. Also learn the
techniques necessary to manage back pain, increase mobility and energy, and help prevent
any further problems. Our one-to-one assessments provide you with a carefully and individually tailored set of yoga exercises that help reduce tension, increase mobility, strengthen muscles, improve posture and help manage pain. Depending on your condition you can then either attend a series of specialised small group classes or continue with individual sessions. The sensitivity of the approach is such that even people in severe pain can feel safe doing the recommended exercises. Other back conditions may also respond to an individually tailored yoga practice. Certain scoliotic conditions, for example, have been shown to respond well to yoga. Neck and upper back problems are covered in this category. Often a shorter assessment is sufficient in these later cases. |
We
usually recommend an initial 90 minute consultation. Here you discuss your
back condition with a specialised low back pain therapist. Then follows a
clinical examination.
The therapist is then in a position to guide you through an initial starter routine particularly tailored to your situation. You are expected to practice this short routine at home. The therapist will then suggest your best course of action. Depending on your situation, this may be to return to a one-to-one session, join a back pain course, or to progress to a gentle therapy class.

| Dr Francoise Babira Freedman
takes the Babies Aqua Yoga. Francoise set up and runs the educational charity which
promotes a holistic approach to birth, Birthlight Trust. She has been conducting Pregnancy
and Childbirth Clinics at the YTC since 1995, and with devotion she maintains a high
standard of training amongst the network of qualified pregnancy and childbirth teachers at
the centre. She writes, 'yoga with babies has been a complement to infant massage in India for millenia. It offers quality physical stimulation including flowing postures, holding, movement, touch and voice. It induces deep relaxation, allowing babies to sleep well and thrive, and mothers to rest and find their balance after giving birth. It induces a happy, care-free and lively parent-infant interaction which develops as the babies grow. 'Yoga is central to integrate body, mind and emotions through the transformations of pregnancy, birth and parenting. Yoga with babies is an original approach developed by Francoise from the joy of practising yoga with her four children as babies. It draws on further training with native grandmothers from various traditions who were willing to pass on their skills to all babies.' The age range of the classics is not strict. The mothers know when it is time for their babies to move on, and the teacher can guide you as to the most appropriate class. |

| Blood Sugar Levels | Classes | ||
| Glucose is your body's
energy source and your cells need a steady supply of it to function. It is important,
therefore, to regulate your blood glucose level carefully. If it is too low, your cells
starve, but a high level, over a long period, leads to infection, muscle wastage, heart
attacks, strokes, blindness, or kidney damage. Your glucose levels are kept within safe
limits by delicate hormonal control, insulin reduces sugar levels, while glucagon and
stress hormones release glucose from your body's energy stores. Diabetes mellitus is
diagnosed when, due to hormonal disturbances, blood glucose levels become dangerously
high. There are two forms of diabetes mellitus: insulin-dependent (IDDM) and noninsulin-dependent (NIDDM). The first is due to low insulin-production by the pancreas. The more common type NIDDM, usually starts after the age of 40 and has many contributory causes, such as obesity, heredity, lack of exercise, autoimmunity, and stress. Yoga can be a powerful additional tool for enhancing conventional diabetes treatment. It makes diet control and weight reduction easier, and is a good form of exercise. It also reduces stress-hormone levels, improves the function of the pancreas, and normalizes your immune system. In NIDDM, yoga may eliminate your need to take insulin or drugs. In IDDM, however, yoga cannot eliminate your insulin requirement, though it may reduce or stabilize it. |
