| Yoga therapy can improve
breathing in people respiratory ailments and other chronic lung conditions. Specially
designed exercises open and relax the chest, stimulate and desensitise the airways, and
reduce mental anxiety. The treatment works on different levels: physical, mental, emotional, and through releasing the flow of energy. Each aspect of yoga practice brings its own benefits, the stamina of your respiratory system increases, you learn to use your lungs more efficiently. As well, energy blocks are released, your energy levels rise and our body and mind are calmed and harmonised. Some chronic lung diseases are immune-related disorders, such as sarcoidosis, allergic inflammation of the air sacs, and occupational lung diseases caused by exposure to harmful or poisonous substances. Some lung infections, such as tuberculosis and fungus infection cause damage such as lung abscesses and dilation of the bronchial tubes unless they are quickly cured or controlled. Yoga cannot repair lung damage once it has occurred, but it can help you manage such ailments and enhances the effectiveness of surgical, drug, and physiotherapy treatments. Yogic breathing techniques and teach you how to oxygenate all parts of your lungs, open out blocked air passages, and expand partially collapsed lungs. They also promote the drainage of secretions and improve general health and stamina. As the efficiency of your immune system increases, infections clear up more quickly and drugs become more effective, so smaller doses are required. In addition to physical improvement through yogic asanas and breathing, which increase functional lung capacity and acto to minimize the degree of damage, yoga makes another important contribution. As a technique for mastery over the mind, yoga can help you to give up smoking. This is vital in the case of severe lung damage, such as in chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Some people with respiratory conditions find the pranayama sessions of help. The therapist will suggest the most suitable course of action for you after the assessment. |

| Epilepsy | Classes | ||
| Like a computer, your nerves
and brain work through tiny electrical pulses. And, just as in a computer, a
"short-circuit" occurs if the intensity of these pulses is not controlled. this
happens during an epileptic seizure, here a sudden surge of electrical discharges from the
brain shocks the entire nervous system. A minor event briefly alters consciousness, and
involves uncontrolled movements and speech, and visual and aural impressions. A major
event entails temporary loss of consciousness, with stiffening of the whole body and
thythmic movements of the limbs and tongue. Normal consciousness soon returns, but brain
damage, even death, can result if seizures are frequent of prolonged. The treatment for epilepsy is medication that controls the seizures but, since their frequency is increased by stress and hyperventilation, yoga has a vital supporting role. It trains you not to hyperventilate, and reduces the frequency of seizures. This may enable your doctor to reduce your medication and allow you to avoid its adverse long-term effects. Yoga techniques such as backward bends, shoulderstand and alternate nostril breathing are encouraged, others such as cat, rabbit breathing and rapid abdominal breath, however, should be avoided. An individual assessment with a trained therapist can suggest a suitable practice, and then direct you to an appropriate class. |

| Our eyes are the most
sophisticated sense organs in our bodies. They contain lenses, muscle systems, and tiny
light receptors that allow us to see the world we live in, a world of colour, movemen, and
almost infinite distance. Yet increasingly often in these days of high stress, television,
and computers we find that our vision is impaired. The 20th century brought us great benefits, yet the hectic pace of modern life which continues in the 21st century imposes a great burden on our eyes. Visual display screens, pollution and stress can all cause eye strain. This tends to precipitate the development of refraction errors (such as short- and long-sightedness and astigmatism), glaucoma, and allergic eye inflammations. Your are far from helpless to prevent such disorders, however. If you take conscious care of you eyes you can considerably reduce eye strain and limit the damage it causes. The yoga method of eye therapy allows you to help yourself holistically, by combining general relaxation to reduce stress with specific eye exercises. This can both arrest the rate of deterioration and bring lasting improvement to already existing eye problems. |
