| Technically
speaking Parkingson's Disease is a progressive degeneration of the basal ganglia of the
cerebrum. How this manifests is in tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity. In other words a
pill rolling tremor of your fingers and thumbs, a slowness and difficulty in initiating
movement, and a stiffness of your limbs throughout your range of movement. The therapist will direct you to the most suitable class upon assessment. Similar yoga practices as those taught in the MS class have been found to be appropriate. |

Postnatal and Baby Yoga was established at the Yoga Therapy Centre by Dr Francoise Barbira Freedman, author of "Yoga for Pregnancy", "Postnatal Yoga" and "Baby Yoga", and Founder and Director of Birthlight, the educational charity which promotes a holistic approach to birth. Francoise has conducted Pregnancy and Childbirth clinics at the Yoga Therapy Centre since 1995, and maintains a high standard of training amongst the network of qualified pregnancy, childbirth and baby yoga teachers at the Centre. Francoise writes, 'yoga with babies has been a complement to infant massage in India for millennia. It offers quality physical stimulation including flowing postures, holding, movement, touch and voice. It induces deep relaxation, allowing babies to sleep and thrive, and mothers to rest and find their balance after giving birth. It induces a happy, carefree and lively parent-infant interaction, which develops as the babies grow. 'Yoga is central to integrate body, mind and emotions through the transformations of pregnancy, birth and parenting. Yoga with Babies is an original approach developed by Francoise from the joy of practising yoga with her four children as babies. It draws on further training with native grandmothers from various traditions who were willing to pass on their skills to all babies.' Giving birth is a very demanding physical event and can give rise to strong emotional and spiritual experiences. This initial elation you feel at the birth may be followed by apprehension, even panic. Your baby's well-being depends almost entirely on your ability to nurture him or her and to satisfy his or her needs. But what about your needs? Yoga can give you a very powerful support at this time of changing responsibilities. It is an ancient system of self-help that brings health and a sense of lightness into every level of your being - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Regular yoga practice specially tailored to your postnatal needs will quickly increase your overall health and fitness and energy levels. You will grow stronger and more toned and supple. You will also feel calmer and more confident, better able to nurture your baby and those close to you as you nurture yourself. What to expect The sessions begin by being guided through routines of yoga exercises that you assist your baby to perform as well as specifically designed postnatal yoga postures and breathing techniques to benefit you. Developing a deep relaxation practice is considered indispensable before the class finishes with tea and chat. The age range of the class is not strict, some begin at a few weeks old and by around eight months they are usually ready to progress to 'Big Baby' yoga class. The mothers know when it is time for their babies to move on, and teachers guide you as to the most appropriate class. Due to the popularity of Baby Yoga, pre-booking is essential. You and your baby should wear loose or stretchy, comfortable clothing, and along with your usual baby paraphernalia, bring a little blanket or terry towel for your baby to lie on. |

| The approach of
yoga therapy is based on ancient Indian traditional beliefs about human existence. In this
philosophy there are five "sheaths" to existence. the physical frame is only the
first. The second is the vital body that is made up of prana, the life energy that
flows through you in invisible channels known as nadis. The third is the mind (your
emotions and thoughts), the fourth is the higher intellect (perfect thought and
knowledge), and the final sheath is the "abode of bliss". Disease is seen to arise through imbalance in any of the three lower sheaths of existence. In Indian philosophy there are two types of physical illness. The other type of illness arises through disturbances in the mind sheath and includes all the psychosomatic and degenerative ailments.They act to obstruct the flow of positive energy to the lower sheaths. This causes imbalances that result in physical ailments and also make you feel restless and discontent. With psychosomatic ailments, yoga provides the vital element that modern therapies lack and acts directly on the mental imbalances that underlie them.
