| Like many other
conditions, varicose veins are more easily prevented than cured. They are caused by the
heart's inability to maintain the flow of blood. Circulation in the veins is usualy aided
by muscular activity, such as walking, but if you are inactive blood may accumulate in the
legs, causing the veins to stretch and elongate. This results in chronic pain,
discoloration of the skin, and repeated nonhealing ulcers. More serious complications can
occur if a clot forms in the stagnant blood and moves up into the heart or lungs. Yoga can
help you avoid clots by making you fit and active, stimulating circulation, and improving
blood drainage. Once varicose veins are formed, yoga cannot cure them, the shape, size, and appearance of the veins under the skin will remain the same. It does, however, help you to mitigate the symptoms and prevent further deterioration. Amongst the most useful are the inverted postures, which improve drainage and reduce stagnation of the blood in your limbs. Before you start yoga, however, consult your doctor and make sure that no clots have formed in your deep veins. Though yoga might reduce your tendency to form clots, if one is already there it may be dislodged by certain yoga exercises or movements. Do not pursue a course of yoga before consulting your doctor. |
