Since 1996, the Yoga Biomedical
Trust (YBT) has been holding residential retreats on spiritual aspects of yoga. Lasting
seven to ten days, and held in contemplative settings, they are led by outstanding
teachers. These retreats were originally conceived to fill a gap in the YBT's Yoga Therapy
Diploma Course, which tended to focus on medical and technical aspects of yoga therapy.
However, it soon became clear that they were providing experience and knowledge from the
heart of yoga, which is largely neglected - even unknown - in much of the yoga taught in
the West. While lip-services is often given to
Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga, the overriding emphasis in most yoga classes in on the
third limb, i.e. asanas. Particularly striking, is the neglect of the fourth limb,
pranayama, which can form a bridge from asanas to the meditative limbs of yoga. Yoga
philosophy and psychology are also largely neglected. The YBT's Retreats cover just these
aspects of yoga. Held largely in silence, they create the 'space' needed for participants
to delve into the deeper aspects of yoga.
The principal focus of Dr Shrikrisha's retreat is on
classical pranayama and yoga philosophy, while Uma Krishnamurthy's is on yoga and modern
psychology, and recent spiritual masters. Their combined retreat blends the two.
Retreat 1
will be held at Park Place, Pastoral Centre, Winchester Road, Wickham,
Fareham, Hants. PO17 5HA.
Retreats 2 & 3
will be held at Hourne Farm, Crowborough, Sussex.
