A parish of great charm, Chipperfield village centres on the Common - 47 hectares of pleasant woodland fronted by the village cricket field. Nothing is more "English" on a fine summer's day to spend a little time watching the local XI take on a visiting side. A way-marked heritage walk across the Common takes the visitor through the wooded area where can be seen a bronze-age tumuli and number of 350-year-old sweet chestnut trees. These were planted "for the delight of Isabel of Castile" and to give her shade as she rode on the Common. Isabel of Castile was the first Duchess of York, the wife of Edmund Langley who lived in the royal palace of nearby Kings Langley. It was Edmund's grandfather, Edward II who granted, in 1316, much of what is now Chipperfield Common to the Dominican Friary at Kings Langley. The Apostles Pond, which will be seen on the heritage walk, was once the monk's fishpond. Many of the buildings in Chipperfield are of significant architectural interest. Looking out onto the Common are some of the village's finest buildings. These include the Two Brewers Inn, once a training headquarters for bare-knuckle prizefighters, the 160-year-old church with a fine east window, and the old Queen Anne-fronted Manor House which was once the home of Peter Sellars. The old flint-built school of 1848 has been converted to cottages, following the building of a new school, but the cottages retain the original school's striking clock erected to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Although proud of its history, Chipperfield is very much a thriving, forward-looking village, as is testified by its many voluntary organisations, its three churches, seven shops, two garden centres, four pubs and two garages. It is home to 1700 people.
