Dear Helen

I am really scared of spiders - each time I see one I freeze up.

It might seem stupid, like it does to my friends who call me a scaredy cat. I want to get over this. Is there anything that could help me?

                  Simon

Dear Simon

First of all, this is a genuine problem and you aren't alone. Lots of people suffer from phobias and this is quite a common one.

Secondly, there is nothing wrong with being a 'scaredy cat' and it takes real courage to face up to your fears, as you are doing.

Thirdly, there is a help line you can ring:

Phobia Action Helpline (01905 590545) - They are open from 10am to 10pm and provide information, advice, listening, counselling, befriending and referrals if needed.  They cover a wide range of anxiety disorders such as phobias, obsessive/compulsive disorders, panic attacks and any other related anxiety disorder.

Finally, please don't suffer in silence; you've made the first step in facing your phobia by trying to do something about it.    If there is any further information you would like please feel free to call Youthline on 01905 613131.

    Good Luck!
