Dear Helen

I'm 17 and live at home with my parents. I've been going out with my boyfriend for just over eight months and I think I might be pregnant.  My period is only one week late, so I'd feel rather embarrassed to go to the doctor because it might be a false alarm  I've told my older sister and she's been really supportive, saying she will come with me to see the doctor when I am ready.  I'm so worried how my parents and boyfriend will react if I am pregnant, what should I do?

                  Susie

Dear Susie

Before you start to worry about people's reactions, it is important for you to visit your doctor so that you know for certain whether or not you are pregnant.  However if you feel unable to see your doctor, you can ask for a female doctor, or visit your nearest family planning clinic - both options will provide you with the confidential facility of a free pregnancy test - a far more reliable method than a home pregnancy test.  If the results of the test is negative then learn from your experience.  If the results are positive then you can discuss the options open to you with your doctor, or an advisor at the family planning centre.
